How to Get More Players on Your Minecraft Server
You built the server, installed the plugins, and created a great spawn. Now you need players. Growing a Minecraft server from zero is one of the hardest parts of running one, but it's very doable with the right approach.
Make a Great First Impression
Before promoting, make sure your server is ready:
- Spawn looks good — A messy spawn tells players the server isn't worth their time
- Core features work — Test every command, shop, warp, and gamemode
- Rules are posted — At spawn and in a /rules command
- Staff are active — New players with unanswered questions will leave
List Your Server Everywhere
Server list sites are the #1 source of new players.
Register on:
- ServerList.cc — Growing list with active voting and good SEO
- TopMinecraftServers.org
- MinecraftServers.org
- Planet Minecraft
- Write a detailed, honest description — explain what makes yours different
- Use a custom banner — servers with eye-catching banners get more clicks
- Keep your listing updated when you add new features
- Set up voting rewards to drive consistent traffic
Set Up Vote Rewards
Install NuVotifier and a vote reward plugin like VotingPlugin. Reward players with:
- In-game currency ($500 per vote)
- Vote crate keys
- Experience bottles
- Vote streaks with escalating rewards
Social Media
Discord
Essential. Create channels for announcements, chat, support, and suggestions. Be active daily.YouTube and TikTok
Short clips of fun moments on your server can go viral. A 30-second TikTok of a cool build or PvP moment can drive hundreds of new players.Run Events
Events give players a reason to log on and invite friends:
- Build competitions with prizes
- PvP tournaments
- Treasure hunts with clues
- Drop parties at spawn
- Seasonal holiday events
Retain Players
Getting players to join is half the battle. Keeping them is the other half.
- Welcome new players with a "welcome!" in chat and a starter kit
- Have progression systems so players always have goals
- Listen to feedback in a suggestions channel
- Fix bugs quickly
- Build a community, not just a server — players stay for the people
What NOT to Do
- Don't spam your IP in other servers' chats
- Don't buy fake player bots — server lists detect this
- Don't give up after a week — growth is slow at first
