How to Make Money Running a Minecraft Server

Running a server costs money. Monetizing can offset those costs, but there are rules.

Mojang's EULA

You CAN sell: Cosmetic items, server access, cosmetic ranks, hard currency (if items are also earnable in-game).

You CANNOT sell: Gameplay advantages non-paying players can't access (pay-to-win), overpowered weapons/armor, exclusive commands like /fly or /god.

Revenue Streams

Cosmetic Ranks

The most common method. Sell tiers with visual perks:
  • VIP ($5) — Colored name, chat prefix
  • VIP+ ($10) — Custom nickname, particles
  • MVP ($20) — Animated prefix, trails
  • MVP+ ($30) — All perks plus custom pet
Use Tebex (BuyCraft) for your web store — it auto-delivers purchases in-game.

Cosmetic Items

Custom hats, particle trails, pets, emotes. Purely visual, no gameplay impact.

Donation Goals

Show monthly hosting costs and progress. Transparency builds trust.

Crate Keys

Sell keys for cosmetic loot crates. Keep gameplay items out to stay EULA-compliant.

Pricing Tips

  • $5-30 is the sweet spot for individual purchases
  • Run frequent sales (20-30% off)
  • Bundle items at a discount
  • Don't pressure players to buy

Realistic Expectations

  • 20 active players: $50-200/month
  • 100+ active players: $500-2000/month
  • Most servers struggle to break even
Don't start a server expecting to get rich. Start it because you enjoy it. Grow your player base on ServerList.cc and monetization follows naturally.
