How to Set Up a Minecraft Survival Server Players Will Love

Survival is Minecraft's bread and butter. Here's how to build one that retains players.

Essential Plugins

Protection: GriefPrevention, CoreProtect Quality of Life: EssentialsX, LuckPerms, Vault Community: DiscordSRV, BlueMap, ChestShop Performance: Spark, Chunky

World Setup

Use Terralith data pack for stunning world generation (no mods needed). Set a world border (16,000 blocks diameter), pre-generate with Chunky.

Economy

  • Install Vault + EssentialsX, starting balance $250
  • Server sell shop for common items
  • ChestShop for player-to-player trading
  • Create a shopping district at spawn
Key principle: Don't make everything buyable. If players can buy diamonds, mining loses purpose.

Ranks and Progression

Auto-promote based on playtime:

  • Newcomer → Settler (10h) → Citizen (50h) → Veteran (200h)
Each rank adds small perks (extra homes, colored name). Rewards loyalty.

Community Features

  • Nether hub with ice roads connecting bases
  • Community builds everyone contributes to
  • Events — build contests, PvP tournaments, treasure hunts
  • Seasons — reset every 3-4 months to keep things fresh

Configuration

  • difficulty=hard, view-distance=10, simulation-distance=6
  • Enable Paper anti-xray (engine-mode 2)
  • spawn-protection=0 (use GriefPrevention instead)
The best survival servers aren't the ones with the most plugins — they're the ones with active, friendly communities. List yours on ServerList.cc.
